That’s right – it’s officially Open Season! At the end of this month hundreds of thousands of CrossFit athletes will compete in the 2019 Open, and there’s no reason that YOU shouldn’t be one of them. If you’re new to PE, we’d like to take a minute to tell you about the Open. If you’ve been with us for more than a year you already know that for 5 weeks – Feb. 21 – March 25 – we’re going to celebrate everything we’ve accomplished in the past
THE OPEN ISN’T ABOUT QUALIFICATION, IT’S ABOUT PARTICIPATION
Don’t get me wrong, in this contest numbers definitely matter - but not in the way you might think. We don’t care nearly as much about qualifying times as we do smiles, modifications, and making this a challenge accessible to everyone. We care about 100% participation because it showcases that CrossFit is a program with the scalability to cure chronic disease just as readily as it can produce elite athletes.
HOW DOES IT WORK AT PE?
Every Friday, CrossFit PE programs the CrossFit Open workout as the Workout of the Day for ALL group classes. That’s right – if you show up to class, you’re going to do the workout anyway, so you might as well sign-up! We will also run heats every Friday night where athletes gather to complete the workout, cheer one another on, and celebrate after.
If you can’t sign-up for a Friday night heat s or complete the workout in Friday’s class don’t worry! We’ll be available for make-up times on Sunday during open gym. This is also your chance to re-do the workout if you want to try to beat your Friday score.
WHAT’S THIS I HEAR ABOUT AN IN-HOUSE CHALLENGE?
This year at PE we’re making the Open bigger than ever by doing an in-house team competition, and I promise you do not want to miss out. In addition to our traditional leader board, teams will complete additional challenges to earn points and prizes.
We’ll team you up based on your usual workout time and ask each team to choose a bingo card. Each bingo box is a different challenge and each card is slightly different – some oriented around physical activity or skill, and some not. You’ll work as a team to complete the boxes and earn a bingo line. We’ll award prizes at the end of week two and week five to the teams with the most points. Trust me, these are some awesome prizes – plus you’ll have bragging rights for a year.
Things to note:
EVERYONE on your team needs to complete the challenge and initial the box, (unless otherwise noted on the card) to earn points.
Points are only counted (end of week 2 and 5) for boxes that add up to a bingo line, so make sure you’re completing FULL LINES, not just picking boxes with high point values
